Innangelo: Silk from the Heart
During this holiday season, I’m especially touched by brands with an ethos of giving back, both now and throughout the year. In the era of the “selfie," it has become even more critical to step away from ourselves and do what we can do to improve the world around us, in whatever way feels personally meaningful.
This leads me to probably the most unexpectedly heartfelt story I have written to date. When I first met Inna Zobova, founder and designer of Innangelo, I was, like most people, struck by her beauty. As a top model for 15 years of her career, Inna became internationally known as the face of Wonderbra, not to mention her numerous magazine covers and runway shows.
When you start to talk to Inna, you quickly realize that she has both the brains AND the beauty. After a hugely successful modeling career, Inna has now intelligently and gracefully segued into the next phase of her life, being the founder and designer of Innangelo, a collection of stunning silk scarves, kaftans and pareos.
When I sat down with Inna in Paris to interview her for this story, what I didn’t realize is how deeply meaningful the creation of the brand was for her and why. She told me, first and foremost, to watch a video that her husband, internationally acclaimed filmmaker and director Bruno Aveillan, made for the launch of the brand. I sat at the table watching the video and cannot remember the last time I was so moved. If you have ten minutes to spare, please watch.
If not, let me explain. As it turns out, Inna was born with a hole in her heart and at the age of 7, underwent a life-threatening heart surgery to save her life. With a deep fear for her future, followed by the intense emotions of surviving such an ordeal, Inna knew that her life had to have a deeper meaning and purpose. Combining her fashion industry experience, her creative energy and the genuine need to give back, Innangelo was born. Meaning “Heart Angel," Innangelo was launched in Paris in 2016 at the renowned concept store Colette and, in two short years, has taken the silk accessories industry by storm. With a wide range of colors, designs and price points in the collection, Inna has also partnered with artists Richard Texier and Mircea Cantor to create “artistic" capsule collections, giving the artists a blank (silk) canvas in which to create.
Most notably and understandably however, a percentage of Innangelo sales are donated back to The Heart Fund, the non-profit organization that saves the lives of children suffering from heart disease, especially in developing countries. As a Heart Fund Ambassador and heart surgery survivor, Inna clearly recognizes the importance of supporting a cause that has the ability to save so many lives, just as her own was saved all those years back. During this hectic holiday season, it is so important to remember what truly matters… both the joy of giving AND the joy of giving back. Thank you Innangelo for inspiring me to do both!
