Museum Worthy Vintage Couture: Renaissance 75007
Paris has no shortage of luxury vintage stores, but this one stands out like a gem in a haystack...
One of my favorite activities walking around Paris is browsing the vintage and consignment fashion stores which you can literally find everywhere. I am always amazed by the sheer amount of super high-end brands you can find in great condition... Chanel, Hermes, Dior, YSL, the list goes on and on. The question I constantly ask myself however when visiting all these stores is, why do they have to be so damn dusty?! The shop owners are carrying the most beautiful brands in the world so shouldn't the stores also be in beautiful condition?!
In comes Renaissance 75007. Located in, you guessed it, the 7th arrondissement on the left bank (FYI, the arrondissement is always the last digit(s) of the Paris zip code), I stumbled upon this gem of a vintage store about five years. The shop owner, Corinne Than-Trong, was friendly and inviting and the store itself was immaculate. There was no dust, no clothes crammed on the racks and no rude salespeople. The environment is upscale and chic and every item has been carefully chosen by Corinne.
I happened to pass by Renaissance again a few weeks and was, again, warmly received by Corinne. What I learned is that Renaissance was founded in 1987 by Corinne's mother and, originally, was specialized in vintage and antiques. Corinne took over the business 10 years ago and, keenly recognizing the emerging market for high-end vintage fashion, transformed the store into the luxury destination it is today. Corinne travels the world, using her sharp eye and innate knowledge of couture and fashion when choosing which items to buy. I asked her where she finds her pieces and she slyly told me mostly from private auctions, private clients and "secret locations", which she wisely cannot reveal.
Her client base includes not only Parisians but "in the know" stylists, celebrities and fashion lovers like myself. I thoroughly enjoyed trying on a few of my favorite looks, from a YSL haute couture red silk dress, circa 1983, to a shimmery Pierre Cardin haute couture black and gold sequin dress, circa 1969. Corinne even had an original magazine from 1969 advertising the dress... talk about authentic!
If you are looking for carefully edited luxury vintage and you're planning a trip to Paris, Renaissance 75007 should be on the top of your "to-do" list! If you can't make it to Paris... shop her assortment on 1st dibs.
